Café de São Bento
The history of Bife à Café de São Bento dates back to the end of the 18th century, when the Neapolitan António Marrare arrived in Lisbon – founder of botenquins and the mythical Cafés Marrare. At the beginning of the 19th century, António Marrare created the famous steak recipe that quickly became famous throughout the city.
In 1982, the founders of Café de São Bento set out in search of the original recipe, researching old newspaperr. They perfected it in the early years of the house, never to change it again to this day.
For 40 years, people have been coming to Café de São Bento to eat the steak, but not just any steak: the unanimously recognised Best Steak in Lisbon. Is it the cut, the quality of the meat, the cooking or the sauce? It’s all that and more… the secret that we’ve kept well since 1982.
Since the opening day, they have dressed up to welcome their cosutmers with the usual attentive service. “Here, customers are personally treated, but also employees by name - our team has remained the same for decades”, says Miguel Garcia, current owner of the Restaurant.
Its ex-libris – Bife – has been creating a legion of fans who come to enjoy it, in any situation: a group dinner in a lively gathering, a romantic meeting in intimate corners, as a ritual passed between generations and, also, of course - due to the proximity to Parliament - for the country's destiny to be decided here at the table...
