At Belcanto, José Avillez offers contemporary Portuguese cuisine in a sophisticated setting that takes us on a journey in time, from Chiado´s old romantic feel to the future. In a place full of details, José Avillez offers a unique sensory and gastronomic voyage.
Belcanto opened in 1958, in Chiado, next to São Carlos National Theatre and to the house where the poet Fernando Pessoa was born. The privileged location in Lisbon´s historic centre, the sober ambience, the discreet service and its cuisine soon won over Lisbon´s elites.
Belcanto by José Avillez opened in 2012, totally refurbished. In that same year, it was distinguished with one Michelin star, and in 2014 with a second one. In 2019, Belcanto was considered the world’s 42nd best restaurant by “The World´s 50 Best Restaurants”.
In May 2019, Belcanto moved to a wider space, next to its previous address, still by São Carlos Square. The restaurant´s dining room and kitchen are now closer, offering an enhanced gastronomic and sensory experience.
