And it all began with a hippy van by the sea

The Chezz Gerdi story is as quaint as the iconic red Volkswagen T1 decorated with hippy motifs that is now a symbol of the restaurant, and the island too. Claudio Passiatore, general manager at Chezz Gerdi, lovingly remembers how the van became the entrance to the restaurant. In its early days, a pair of friends camped outside the restaurant in their van, grabbing the attention of visitors who couldn’t resist having their photo taken with it. This image of freedom and carefree hedonism perfectly captured the essence of Formentera, and soon formed part of the spirit of Chezz Gerdi.

Flavours of summer: raw dishes and sushi by the sea

Chezz Gerdi is famous for its relaxed vibe and links to Formentera’s hippy side, and also for its constant culinary evolution. When it first started, the restaurant was known for its pizzas, signature pasta, and Mediterranean dishes, but over time it has broadened and diversified its food to satisfy sophisticated diners, now specialising in raw dishes and sushi.

In fact, Chezz Gerdi is currently the only restaurant in Formentera to have a specialised raw food and sushi menu. The freshness of the ingredients and skill at preparing these dishes has made the restaurant a benchmark for Japanese food enthusiasts. But its range of food doesn’t stop there. The menu includes everything from local fish and spectacular rice dishes to matured meat and the highest quality sea food, such as rock lobster, lobster, and king crab.

And because every great meal should be accompanied by a fine wine, Chezz Gerdi also has an impressive wine menu with over 500 champagnes, cavas, and sparkling wines, and a wide selection of white, red, and rosé wine from Spain, Italy, and other parts of Europe. This carefully curated selection guarantees that each dish is perfectly paired with the right wine to enhance the gourmet experience yet further.

On its 15th anniversary, Chezz Gerdi continues to be a benchmark in Formentera thanks to its first-class food and its ability to create a unique, memorable atmosphere. From its beginnings as a party venue to becoming the famous culinary destination it is today, Chezz Gerdi has always maintained its original essence while adapting to new trends and public demand.

At Chezz Gerdi, great thought goes into every detail so that visitors feel as though they are in a truly special place. Whether you enjoy a romantic dinner in the iconic van, treat yourself to fresh sushi while watching the sun go down, or simply unwind with a relaxing cocktail, the restaurant offers an experience that captures the true spirit of Formentera.

With a history shaped by innovation and continuous improvement, Chezz Gerdi is celebrating its 15th anniversary with the promise of continuing to offer the best of the island’s food and lifestyle. It is an unmissable destination for enthusiasts of fine dining and idyllic landscapes.
