Can Martí, from the fields to the table

Can Martí, from the fields to the table

Martí Juan Mayans

The Can Martí story began in the 1970s, when Martí Juan Mayans’ family opened an enchanting restaurant on Migjorn Beach. It became an emblem of the island and the family ran it until 1988. Five decades later, the Can Martí spirit has returned with the same enthusiasm it had at the very beginning. Today, it is managed by Martí Juan Mayans, son and grandson of the founders and owner of Agromartí, the largest farm on the island. The restaurant promises to be a place where you can savour authentic produce from Formentera, and where the finest local ingredients used in each dish truly come “from the fields to the table”.

A family legacy and a new vision

Martí Juan Mayans is well-known in Formentera, partly for being the heir to Can Martí, and also thanks to his success as the head of Agromartí, a farming company that distributes the best products grown in the fields to restaurants and individuals on the island. With over a decade’s farming experience, Martí has decided to bring the freshness of the fields to the table in his own restaurant. Ever since he started out, Martí has work tirelessly to grow ecological cereals, fruit, and vegetables to supply neighbours and restaurants in Formentera with the finest products from the island. “I started from nothing and now have three hectares of horticultural land and ten hectares of dry land,” explains Martí, who has progressively added more hectares to his farmland.

“We’re back with the same enthusiasm my parents and grandparents had 50 years ago,” states Martí, who has taken the reins of the family business and added his own innovative approach that combines tradition and modernity. Can Martí is more than just a restaurant, it is a unique opportunity for Martí to close the circle, offering customers the best ingredients from Formentera that are grown on his own farm.

The finest zero-mile produce

Martí has a clear goal: to offer customers the highest quality local produce. This commitment can be seen in each dish served at Can Martí. “Seasonal produce is absolutely key to us. We work with fish from Formentera, barbecued meat, and always promote our seasonal produce. That’s what matters most to us,” explains Martí. Such a deep respect for local ingredients guarantees unbeatable freshness, and also supports the economy and sustainability of the island.

Can Martí stands apart for specialities that combine tradition and modernity. Some of the most popular dishes include fried lobster with potatoes and eggs, boiled Formentera octopus, and black rice with shrimp. “Tradition is always our starting point,” continues Martí, who ensures that each recipe maintains the true essence of local cooking. After all, these dishes are more than just a delicious treat, they also tell stories about the island’s culinary culture.

“At home at Can Martí”

One of the biggest attractions of Can Martí is the friendly and approachable service the whole team offers its diners. “Customers feel like they’re at home,” says Martí, emphasising the importance of creating an atmosphere where each visitor experiences Formentera’s most authentic side.

The restaurant is open every day and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you can enjoy its wide range of food at any time of day. Can Martí has a “young and enthusiastic team” and aims to swiftly position itself as a benchmark restaurant in the Migjorn area.

Looking to the future, Martí hopes that Can Martí will become a place where people can enjoy a unique culinary experience. “We want to be the hot restaurant this year, the one everyone’s talking about,” states Martí, trusting that his passion and hard work lead to success.

The combination of history, family tradition, innovation, commitment, and sustainability make Can Martí a deeply special place. Here, each dish tells a story, and each visit is a chance to discover the true essence of Formentera.
